What Do Cats and Leprechauns Have in Common?

Cat Stanley, in true Irish tradition

Here I am, CAT Stanley, in true Irish tradition and ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

This is, in part, what Wikipedia has to say about leprechauns:

A leprechaun (Irish: leipreachán) is a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. The leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release. Popular depiction shows the leprechaun as being no taller than a small child, with a beard and hat.

What do we cats have in common with leprechauns? Well, I’m not aware that we’ve ever actually been linked historically to them at all. But still, today’s St. Patrick’s Day and everybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, right? Right!

Clad in a red or green coat? Some of our two-legged friends like to put us in funny-looking costumes and some of those might be green on a day like today. I think most of us cats would prefer to go “au naturel” though and some of us do have a gorgeous natural red hair coat!

Mischievous? Some of you two-legged folks might consider some of us cats mischievous. Really, we’re just doing cat stuff, though.

The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Nope, we don’t have one of those. We’d rather that the pot be filled with catnip anyway. Gold doesn’t mean a lot to us.

Three wishes? Hmmm…that depends on what your wishes are. If you wish for a companion that will always keep you entertained, we’ll grant that wish. Want somebody to get you out of bed in the morning in time for breakfast? Wish granted! How about an intelligent and clever furriend? We’ve got that wish covered. What else could you ask for?

Small in size? We may be in small in size compared to some of the our bigger cousins. You know, those “big cats” like lions and tigers. But we’re big on personality.

Okay, maybe I’m am pushing it a little bit comparing us cats to leprechauns. But here’s one wish I can deliver! Would you like a “paw-tographed” photo of me, CAT Stanley? Now, come on, folks. Honestly, who wouldn’t want one of those!

Hi there. I’m a rescue cat. I was originally a barn cat. When I got hurt at the barn, the Dumb Friends League in Denver took me in and fixed me up. Now I live Dr. Jane Brunt, CATalyst Council’s CEO.
